Zimbabwe & Zambia
Both Zambia and Zimbabwe offer the safari enthusiast something a little different and are renowned as premier destinations for walking safaris, being home to some of the best guides in Africa. With relatively little tourism compared to some of their neighbours, they offer a truly uncrowded wilderness experience, and varied wildlife that strays away from the "Big 5" tick-lists.
South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue in Zambia are fantastic wildlife areas for leopard sightings, and Hwange never fails to disappoint in Zimbabwe, where we also highly recommend a visit to Mana Pools for you can enjoy a canoeing safari - it's a very different experience! Of course the magnificent Victoria Falls is the bridging point for these two countries, a highlight second to none and well worth a visit time and time again whenever you find yourself in the area.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, which of course attracts a higher rate, typically runs between April/May to October with warm weather until late June at which point the chilly mornings set in so bring some layers for your morning safari walks or drives. The wet season does bring with it heavy rains, hot weather and humid days, and some of the parks do close during this time as they become impassable and difficult to spot game due to the abundance of water!
If you are looking to tie in a trip to Victoria Falls alongside your safari, high water usually peaks in March and April which makes it a very immersive visit as you'll get pretty wet from the spray and you'll certainly feel and hear the mighty power of the falls (note this is our favourite time), but if you are looking to get some perfect pictures then you may prefer to visit in May to September where the spray is a little calmer.
